Qualcomm, a leader in mobile chip technology, has expanded its reach into the automotive sector, providing chips for both dashboards and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) used by major automakers like General Motors. Google, known for its cutting-edge AI and the ubiquitous Android operating system, will contribute its expertise in voice recognition and natural language processing.

Android Automotive OS Gets a Qualcomm Boost

While many consumers are familiar with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which mirror smartphone apps on vehicle displays, Google’s Android Automotive OS is a more comprehensive platform designed to power a vehicle’s entire computing system. This partnership will see Qualcomm and Google optimize Android Automotive OS to run seamlessly on Qualcomm’s latest chips, enabling automakers to create truly integrated and intelligent in-car experiences.

Personalized AI Voice Assistants Without Phone Reliance

“Typically, we have operated together, but independently,” said Nakul Duggal, group manager for automotive at Qualcomm. “We decided we should think about this differently because it will reduce a lot of friction and confusion.” This collaboration aims to simplify the process for automakers, allowing them to leverage Google’s AI technology to develop personalized voice assistants that are unique to their brand and function independently of a driver’s smartphone.

New Chips Power Next-Generation Vehicles

To support this initiative, Qualcomm also introduced two new chips: Snapdragon Cockpit Elite for advanced dashboard functionalities and Snapdragon Ride Elite for self-driving features. Mercedes-Benz Group has already committed to using the Snapdragon Elite Cockpit chip in future vehicles, marking a significant endorsement of Qualcomm’s commitment to the automotive market.
