A new Covid variant, called Stratus, is spreading in the UK, health officials have confirmed. While it is currently unclear whether Stratus will cause a significant wave of infections, experts are monitoring the situation closely.

details about the variant’s characteristics, such as its transmissibility and severity, are still emerging. Initial reports suggest that Stratus shares some similarities with previous Omicron subvariants, but further analysis is needed to determine its potential impact on vaccine effectiveness and hospitalisation rates.

The UK health Security agency (UKHSA) is conducting genomic sequencing to track the spread of Stratus and assess its properties. They are urging the public to remain vigilant and follow existing guidance on hygiene and ventilation.

“We are aware of the new variant and are taking all necessary steps to understand its potential impact,” a UKHSA spokesperson said. “Vaccination remains the best defense against Covid-19, and we encourage everyone eligible to get their booster jab.”

The emergence of Stratus comes as the UK enters the autumn and winter months, when respiratory viruses typically circulate more widely. Health officials are preparing for a potential increase in Covid-19 cases alongside seasonal influenza and other infections.

The latest data on Covid-19 cases and hospitalisations will be published regularly on the UKHSA website. The public is advised to stay informed and follow the latest advice from health authorities.
