Nutrients to Reduce the Risk of Otitis Media in Children

Many children experience repeated fevers or ear pain, which may be due to otitis media! Nutritionist Gao Minmin, on the Facebook page Gao Minmin Nutritionist, suggests that supplementing with vitamins A, C, D, the mineral zinc, and probiotics can definitely help reduce the risk of otitis media through daily diet and lifestyle adjustments.

Key Nutrients for Prevention

● Vitamin A: Consume carrots, sweet potatoes, and spinach to help maintain the integrity of the respiratory tract and Eustachian tube mucosa, reducing pathogen invasion.

● Vitamin C: Eating kiwi, citrus fruits, and bell peppers can prevent oxidation and effectively enhance protection.

● Vitamin D: Salmon and egg yolks can help improve immunity and reduce repeated respiratory infections.

● Zinc: Pumpkin seeds, nuts, and seafood can accelerate wound repair and prevent inflammation.

● Probiotics + Prebiotics: Yogurt, kimchi, oats, and onions help balance gut bacteria and strengthen the body’s defenses.

Gao Minmin recommends limiting or avoiding high-sugar foods (soda, candy) as they can cause blood sugar fluctuations and weaken immunity. Fried and processed foods (fried chicken, fries, sausages), and also high-oil and high-salt foods, can promote inflammation. Excessive cold drinks can also irritate the throat and increase infection risk.

Otolaryngologist Zhang Yihao emphasizes that recurrent otitis media in children should not be ignored. Due to their developing Eustachian tubes and weaker immune systems, children are more susceptible to repeated infections from colds or allergies.
