The NBA is back in China, marking a notable return after a period of strained relations. The recent preseason games between the brooklyn Nets and the Los Angeles Lakers where played in an unusually subdued atmosphere, with minimal fan reaction and no post-game press conferences. Renewed Engagement: Nets and Suns in Macau
The Brooklyn Nets and the Phoenix Suns have arrived in Macau for two preseason games, scheduled for Friday and Sunday. these games represent the first NBA contests played in China since 2019. The NBA has also announced plans for two additional games in China next season.
“I think it’s very significant for us to bring the live game experience to so many NBA fans around the world,” said NBA Deputy Commissioner mark Tatum. “And there is no doubt that China has one of the largest fan bases in the world: hundreds of millions of fans in China, 300 million people play basketball in China, and our mission is to inspire and connect people everywhere thru basketball.”
A History of Disruption
The NBA’s previous access to the Chinese market was jeopardized by a geopolitical dispute. The controversy began with a tweet from then-Houston Rockets (now philadelphia 76ers) General manager Daryl Morey, expressing support for anti-government protesters in Hong Kong.
This sparked a significant backlash from China, leading to the removal of NBA games from chinese broadcast channels. Rebuilding the relationship took years of effort.
The return to China occurs amidst ongoing trade tensions between the United States and China, with both countries threatening substantial tariffs. Despite these challenges, the NBA is prioritizing its connection with its vast Chinese fanbase.
