Kerber Claims Luxembourg Ladies Tennis Masters Title in Dramatic debut

Four months after giving birth to her second child, former World No.1 Angelique Kerber delivered a stunning performance on her debut at the Luxembourg Ladies Tennis Masters, edging newly retired Alizé Cornet in Sunday’s title bout 1-6, 6-3, 10-7.

Along her path to victory, Kerber also secured wins over defending champion Kirsten Flipkens in the quarterfinals and Barbora Strycova in the semifinals. Cornet, also making her first appearance at the event, demonstrated her competitive spirit with a semifinal win against Anett Kontaveit, after advancing to the last four when Kim Clijsters sustained an Achilles injury during their opening match.

Rounding out the eight-woman field at the Coque arena this year were Eugenie Bouchard, who battled fiercely against Strycova in a captivating quarterfinal, and Anabel Medina Garrigues, who was defeated by kontaveit.

For 25 years, Luxembourg served as a beloved stop on the WTA Tour, renowned for its intimate atmosphere and loyal following among players. The tournament boasts a prestigious list of champions, including six former World No.1s – among them Kim Clijsters, who holds the record for the moast WTA 250 titles in Luxembourg with five victories.
