A new study finds that dogs can smell when humans are stressed

Dogs are known for their incredible sense of smell, but a new study published in the journal PLOS ONE suggests they can detect changes in human stress levels through our scent. Researchers found that dogs could accurately identify sweat samples collected from people while they were stressed, compared to samples collected when they were relaxed.

The study involved collecting sweat samples from 36 participants before, during, and after a stressful task – solving a challenging math problem within a time limit. Dogs, along with their handlers, were then presented with these samples and asked to identify which ones came from the stressed participants.

The results showed that dogs consistently and accurately identified the stressed sweat samples, even when the samples were diluted. This suggests that dogs aren’t just picking up on the scent of sweat itself, but on specific chemical changes that occur in human sweat when we’re stressed – things like cortisol, often called the “stress hormone.”

“This is the first study to demonstrate that dogs can detect human stress through smell,” says Clara Wilson,a researcher involved in the study. “It opens up exciting possibilities for how we can use dogs to help people manage stress and anxiety.”

Researchers believe this ability could have implications for training dogs to become emotional support animals or to assist people with conditions like PTSD. The study also highlights the deep connection between humans and dogs, and how attuned they are to our emotional states.
