WORLD STROKE DAY
Stroke cases in Catalonia are rising by 8% annually, driven by an aging population, according to the Agència de Qualitat i Avaluació Sanitàries de Catalunya (AQuAS). Early intervention is critical.
Dr. Lola Cocho,Professor of Medicine at UIC Barcelona and head of neurology at Granollers General Hospital, emphasizes the urgency. “Every minute of cerebral ischemia results in the loss of two million neurons and reduces the chance of a positive outcome.”
Dr. Cocho recently led a project utilizing generative AI. This technology analyzes head CT scans and generates a report with over 80% sensitivity in just three minutes. it’s a powerful tool for emergency teams to quickly assess and treat patients.
Barcelona, October 28, 2025 – Experts at UIC Barcelona stress the importance of both rapid detection and thorough rehabilitation for maximizing recovery after a stroke, coinciding with World Stroke Day on October 29.
Approximately 25,000 people in Catalonia experience a stroke each year, and that number is growing by 8% annually,as reported by AQuAS. Dr. Cocho advocates for expanding the number of dedicated stroke units within hospitals to meet this increasing need.
Treatment options significantly improve recovery chances. “Thrombolytic therapy increases the probability of functional recovery by 13%, thrombectomy by 25%, and a stroke unit by 30%,” explains Dr. Cocho. She firmly believes stroke units are vital for effective patient care.
Rapid medical attention is paramount.
Dr. cocho reiterates the critical need for swift medical intervention: “Every minute of cerebral ischemia means the loss of two million neurons.”
