Illness at Andrews Air Force Base Following Suspicious Package
Multiple employees at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland fell ill last night and several were hospitalized after a suspicious package was delivered, CNN and Reuters reported.
A statement from the management of the base, located outside Washington, said that an employee opened a suspicious package in one of the buildings on the complex.
According to CNN, the shipment contained a white powder. An initial field test by the HAZMAT team found nothing hazardous, but the examination is ongoing.
“The first teams sent to the scene of the incident resolute that there were no immediate threats and handed the case over to the Office of special Investigations. An investigation is currently underway,” said the official proclamation from Andrews.
As a precaution, the building where the package was opened, and also the surrounding areas, were evacuated and the area was cordoned off.
In 2023, over 30 white powder letters were sent to congressmen and other officials in the US state of Kansas. The shipments were sent to the home addresses of the state’s representatives in Congress, and the investigation was handled by the state coroner’s office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
