Data from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) IDF Diabetes Atlas 11th edition predicts a significant increase in diabetes sufferers worldwide over the next quarter century.

Indonesia is projected to have 28.6 million people living with diabetes by 2050, placing it fifth globally in the number of cases.

China is expected to have the highest number of diabetes cases in 2050, reaching 168.3 million people. india follows closely with 156.7 million, and Pakistan rounds out the top three with 70.2 million sufferers.

The United States is fourth with 43 million cases. Indonesia is the only Southeast Asian country on this list, and its diabetes population is projected to grow by 8.2 million since 2024.

National diabetes prevalence in Indonesia is also rising quickly. It was 5.1% in 2011 and doubled to 11.3% by 2024. projections estimate a prevalence of 12.6% in 2025.

Egypt (24.7 million) and Brazil (24 million) represent the highest numbers from North Africa and South America, respectively. Bangladesh (23.1 million) and Mexico (19.9 million) follow, while Türkiye (14.1 million) completes the top ten.

This data focuses on adults and seniors aged 20-79.

What is the Maximum Sugar Consumption per Day?

According to Minister of Health Regulation (Permenkes) Number 28 of 2023 concerning Daily Sugar Intake, the maximum daily sugar consumption is 50 grams, or about 4 tablespoons. This regulation aims to control the increase in diabetes cases in Indonesia.

The Ministry of Health also emphasizes the importance of reducing sugar consumption from sweetened beverages. Sugary drinks contribute considerably to the rise in diabetes and obesity.

Health experts recommend prioritizing a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to help prevent diabetes and maintain overall health. Regular physical activity is also crucial.
