The Alarming Health Risks of Ultra-Processed Foods
Table of Contents
Ultra-processed food (UPF) is linked to harm in every major organ system of the human body and poses a seismic threat to global health, according to the world’s largest review.
UPF is also rapidly displacing fresh food in the diets of children and adults on every continent, and is associated with an increased risk of a dozen health conditions, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and depression.
the sharp rise in UPF intake worldwide is being spurred by profit-driven corporations using a range of aggressive tactics to drive consumption, skew scientific debate and prevent regulation, the review of evidence suggests.
The findings, from a series of three papers published in the Lancet, come as millions of people increasingly consume UPF such as ready meals, cereals, protein bars, fizzy drinks and fast food.
What Exactly *Is* Ultra-Processed Food?
In Ireland, Britain and the US, more than half the average diet now consists of UPF. For some, especially people who are younger, poorer or from disadvantaged areas, a diet comprising as much as 80 per cent UPF is typical. Evidence reviewed by 43 of the world’s leading experts suggests that diets high in UPF are linked to overeating, poor nutritional quality and higher exposure to harmful chemicals and additives.
But what defines ultra-processed food? it’s not simply food that’s been altered from its natural state. UPFs are industrial formulations made entirely or mostly from substances derived from foods – oils, fats, sugars, starch, and proteins – and additives. These ingredients are combined to create products that are highly palatable, convenient, and often cheap. They typically contain little to no whole foods.
The Widespread Health Impacts of UPF Consumption
A systematic review of 104 long-term studies conducted for the series reveals a strong correlation between high UPF intake and a multitude of health problems. Here’s a breakdown of the key areas affected:
- Cancer: Increased risk of several cancers, including colorectal, breast, and prostate cancer.
- Cardiovascular Disease: Higher rates of heart attack, stroke, and hypertension.
- mental Health: A notable link to depression and anxiety.
- Obesity & Metabolic Disorders: UPFs contribute to weight gain, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome.
- Gastrointestinal Issues: Increased risk of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other digestive problems.
- Neurological Disorders: Emerging evidence suggests a potential link to cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases.
Why Are UPFs So Harmful?
The detrimental effects of UPFs aren’t solely due to their nutritional deficiencies. Several factors contribute to their harmful impact:
- Poor Nutrient Profile: UPFs are typically low in essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
- High Sugar,Salt, and Fat Content: These ingredients are added to enhance palatability and drive consumption.
- Additives & Chemicals: UPFs frequently enough contain artificial colors, flavors, emulsifiers, and preservatives, some of which may have adverse health effects.
- Altered Gut Microbiome: UPFs can disrupt the balance of bacteria in the gut, leading to inflammation and impaired immune function.
