Chris Brown’s controversial behavior is once again under scrutiny in Investigation Discovery’s new documentary, “Chris Brown: A History of Violence.”
The documentary dives into allegations made against Brown by numerous women, including Rihanna, Karrueche Tran, and others. A Jane Doe comes forward, alleging Brown drugged and raped her on Sean “Diddy” Combs’s yacht in 2020. Brown’s attorneys vehemently deny these claims, calling all allegations in the documentary “malicious and false.”
What is Chris Brown: A History of Violence About?
Timed with Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the documentary chronicles Brown’s rise to fame, touted as the next Michael Jackson, and his subsequent fall from grace after assaulting Rihanna in 2009. Leaked police photos revealed the graphic extent of Rihanna’s injuries, leading to Brown pleading guilty to felony assault.
The documentary explores Brown’s history of alleged violence, highlighting incidents involving Tran, Combs, Drake, Frank Ocean, and others.
Brown’s tumultuous relationship with Rihanna, marked by reconciliation attempts, further abuse allegations, and eventual separation, is examined. Domestic violence experts discuss how witnessing abuse growing up can perpetuate harmful patterns.
One expert, Freddy Sayegh, stated, “I looked at most of his criminal history, and he’s got a 15-year history of nearly every year of his life being involved in reported violence of some sort.”
Despite these allegations, Brown remains a popular figure, maintaining his superstar status.
Brown himself joked about attempts to have him “blackballed” during his recent tour, showcasing his continued influence.
However, the documentary raises crucial questions about accountability, the entertainment industry’s response to allegations, and the lasting impact of Brown’s actions.
Woman Who Accused Brown of Rape Appears in Doc
Jane Doe, the woman accusing Brown of rape, speaks candidly about her alleged encounter. She claims Brown drugged her, led her to a bedroom, and raped her despite her protests.
Doe’s initial lawsuit was dismissed, but she continues to seek justice. Her attorney, Ariel Mitchell-Kidd, expresses unwavering belief in Doe’s story.
Mitchell-Kidd states, “I believe what happened to her is 100% true. I feel that I failed her as an attorney because I couldn’t make her comfortable enough with me in such a short period of time where she felt 100% comfortable being forthcoming with me.”
Brown’s attorneys deny Doe’s claims, stating they are fabricated.
The documentary also revisits other allegations against Brown, including a 2016 incident involving Liziane Gutierrez, who claims Brown gave her a black eye after a party at his Las Vegas hotel.
Look How Long It Took for R. Kelly to Fall
The documentary draws parallels between Brown’s case and that of R. Kelly, highlighting the long-standing pattern of allegations against both men before they faced serious legal consequences.
Sunny Hostin, who hosted ID’s aftershow following the Brown documentary, expressed shock at how quickly people seem to have forgotten Brown’s assault on Rihanna.
“The assault on Rihanna was over 15 years ago, but I remember it like it was yesterday because I remember being in the courtroom,” said Hostin. “But I just recently had a friend take her son and a group of other children to a Chris Brown concert, and when they came back, I was sort of shocked, and I said to her and to the teenagers: Do you know that he really, really hurt Rihanna? They had no idea.”
“Chris Brown: A History of Violence” premieres Sunday, October 27, at 9 p.m. ET on ID.
