New Zealand Enhances Cancer Prevention and Treatment Initiatives

Wellington, New Zealand – December 11, 2025 – New Zealand is making critically important strides in cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment, according to recent announcements and a report released today by teh Cancer Control Agency. Health Minister Simeon Brown highlighted the government’s commitment to improving cancer care across the country.

The State of Cancer in New Zealand 2025 report demonstrates positive trends, including declining smoking rates across all ethnicities, increased effectiveness and accessibility of screening programs, and improved long-term survival rates over the past two decades. https://www.cancercontrol.govt.nz/

A key component of these improvements is a NZ$604 million (approximately US$350.17 million) investment to fund 33 cancer medicines through Pharmac,New Zealand’s pharmaceutical management agency. https://pharmac.govt.nz/ This funding will ensure access to vital treatments for cancer patients.

The government is also expanding cancer screening programs. The age for routine bowel screening will be lowered to 58,aligning with Australian standards. Breast screening will be extended to include women aged 70 to 74. Furthermore, New Zealand is launching its first national cervical cancer elimination strategy, aiming to considerably reduce the incidence of this cancer. These initiatives are supported by investments in critical cancer infrastructure.

The report projects a significant increase in cancer diagnoses, rising from over 30,000 in 2025 to more than 45,000 by 2044, underscoring the need for continued investment and proactive planning. This projected increase is likely due to a combination of factors, including an aging population and improved diagnostic capabilities.

To prepare for this anticipated rise in cases, the updated New Zealand Cancer Action Plan 2019-2029 is scheduled for release next year. This plan will outline strategies to strengthen the cancer control system and ensure new Zealanders have access to world-class cancer care.
