Kentucky State University Shooting: Parent Charged with Murder
FRANKFORT, Ky. – Jacob Lee Bard, 48, of Evansville, Indiana, has been charged with murder and assault following a shooting on the Kentucky State University campus on December 9, 2025, that resulted in one studentS death and left another critically injured. Bard, the parent of two Kentucky State students, was ordered to be held on a $1 million bond.
According to reports from the Kentucky State Police,the shooting occurred during an altercation. Authorities responded to a call at approximately 9:30 PM near the Student Union building.Upon arrival,officers discovered one student deceased and another with life-threatening injuries.The injured student was immediately transported to a local hospital for treatment. their current condition remains critical but stable as of December 12, 2025.
Bard was apprehended at the scene and taken into custody. Investigators have indicated that the shooting stemmed from a dispute involving Bard and his children. while details surrounding the argument remain limited, preliminary investigations suggest a heated exchange preceded the gunfire.
“This is a tragic event that has deeply impacted our Kentucky State University family,” stated University President dr.Raymond Burse in a press conference on December 10, 2025. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the student who lost their life and offer our unwavering support to the injured student and their family. We are cooperating fully with law enforcement officials during their examination.”
The identity of the deceased student is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The university has made counseling services available to students, faculty, and staff affected by the shooting.
Franklin County Jail records confirm Bard is being held on charges of murder and first-degree assault. He is scheduled to appear in Franklin District Court on December 19, 2025, for a preliminary hearing.
