An elderly couple in Kampung Batu 17, Padang Rengas, is facing hardship as decades of recurring floods have severely damaged their home. Hanim Azwar Mohd, 69, and her husband, Mohd sapiee Kamarudin, 69, are living in increasingly unsafe conditions, with their 40-year-old house suffering from structural issues. Efforts to repair the damage have been unsuccessful due to the persistent flooding.

Home Deterioration and Health concerns

Hanim explained that the house has gradually deteriorated over the past two decades due to frequent overflows from a nearby stream. The kitchen is significantly affected, the roof leaks, and cracks have appeared in the walls. Previous attempts to repair the damage with the help of neighbors have proven temporary, as the problems worsen with each flood event.

Adding to the family’s difficulties, Mohd Sapiee has been battling chronic lung disease for 20 years and requires continuous oxygen support. The couple relies on monthly assistance from Baitulmal, but a significant portion of these funds is used to cover the cost of the oxygen equipment. Their children, while supportive, are also focused on providing for their own families.

“I hope there are parties willing to help us,” Hanim said during a visit on Saturday.
