Early Math Education Key to Developing Indonesia’s Future Workforce

Jakarta – Introducing mathematics education at a young age is crucial for Indonesia’s development of a skilled and competitive workforce, according to Amich Alhumami, Deputy for Human, Community, and Cultural Development at the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas).

Mathematics for Cognitive Development

Speaking on Tuesday, Alhumami emphasized the importance of mathematics for cognitive skills development. “Mathematics is needed for cognitive skills because it hones logic,” he explained.

In line with this belief, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education is prioritizing mathematics education from kindergarten level, recognizing its long-term impact on children’s future.

Age-Appropriate Learning

Alhumami clarified that early math education doesn’t involve complex formulas. It’s about introducing age-appropriate mathematical concepts and engaging children in fun learning experiences.

“We can package it (mathematics) for children,” he assured.

Teacher training plays a vital role in ensuring successful implementation. Educators must possess pedagogical skills to tailor math lessons effectively to children’s developmental stages.

Boosting STEM Expertise

The aim of this initiative is to enhance Indonesia’s human resources, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, where expertise remains limited. President Prabowo Subianto recognizes the importance of STEM development and has outlined improving science and technology skills as a key priority for Indonesia’s future.

President Subianto prioritizes improving learning methods, training for mathematics teachers, and introducing mathematics from early childhood, particularly grades 1 through 4. These efforts aim to strengthen Indonesia’s STEM workforce and propel the nation toward a brighter future.
