Malaysia Leads ASEAN in 2025, Pledging Inclusivity and Sustainability
Malaysia officially assumed the rotating chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on January 1, 2025. This marks the fifth time the nation has held the leadership position since ASEAN’s founding in 1967. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will lead the bloc under the theme of “Inclusivity and Sustainability,” tackling pressing regional issues.
Addressing Key Challenges
Myanmar’s ongoing civil war and disputes in the South China Sea are among the major challenges Malaysia aims to address during its chairmanship. The country plans to promote dialogue and cooperation amongst ASEAN member states to find peaceful and sustainable solutions to these complex issues.
A Year of Diplomatic Momentum
Malaysia has a packed agenda for its ASEAN chairmanship year, hosting over 300 key meetings and programs.
This includes the inaugural ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Plus China Summit in May 2025 and a meeting of ASEAN leaders with partner countries later in the year. These events will provide platforms to strengthen regional ties and address shared interests.
Focus on Innovation and Development
Beyond addressing regional issues, Malaysia plans to champion initiatives in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), renewable energy, tourism, and healthcare. These focus areas reflect the country’s commitment to fostering innovation and driving sustainable development within ASEAN.
Expanding the ASEAN Family
ASEAN, comprising Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam, is home to over 700 million people and boasts a GDP of US$3.8 trillion. In 2025, Timor-Leste is expected to join the bloc as its 11th member, further expanding ASEAN’s influence and economic power.
