AI Job Replacement: Historians, Nurses, and the Future of Work

Thirty-eight-year-old writer Joe Turner is among the people for whom artificial intelligence significantly complicates his work. “It’s a betrayal. You put so much effort, your heart and soul into it, and then a machine replaces you,” the server quoted him as saying SkyNews.

His occupation is in the group of 40 professions that AI replaces the fastest. According to an analysis carried out by Microsoft last year, the work of writers could be “made more efficient” by 85% by artificial intelligence. The most endangered positions in the top ten of the same list include translators (98% of their work can be done by AI), but also historians, mathematicians and proofreaders (91%).

Of the full 83%, artificial intelligence could also replace journalistic work. She would also handle more than half of the work for editors (78%), announcers and radio DJs (74%), web developers (73%), personal financial advisors (69%), but also archivists (66%) or PR specialists (63%).

The author of the survey, Kiran Tomlinson, said that their study only “investigated in which fields of work artificial intelligence models will be able to be used more significantly, not take people’s jobs”. But the writer Joe Turner does not share the company’s optimism. And he is not alone.

“If you look at the positions mentioned three to five years ahead, it is very likely that they will be completely replaced,” SkyNews quoted an AI consultant as saying on condition of anonymity.

“By their very nature, these jobs are most likely to be replaced. We live in a world where we are witnessing an important turning point,” said AI researcher and assistant professor at Imperial College London Xinrong Zhu.

Layoffs due to AI

Microsoft itself has previously announced the layoffs of thousands of employees and high investments in the development of data centers. Amazon is also planning to cut jobs, where, according to CEO Andy Jassa, it is expected to “reduce the total number of employees as part of work efficiency through the use of AI.”

According to the survey World Economic Forum as of last year, roughly 40% of employers expect to downsize in areas where AI can automate necessary tasks.

However, Microsoft’s analysis also pointed to jobs where artificial intelligence can still perform a maximum of 10% or less of tasks instead of a human.

AI could represent the mentioned 10%, for example, with massage therapists, and it could help fitters and repairmen in 4% of tasks. For roofers, housekeepers or cleaners, the survey reports only 2%, and one percent less for operators of heavy machinery or bridges.

Positions in which it is still impossible to do without a person are, for example, nurses, but also floor sanders or railway track layers.
