On February 20, Liepāja will experience a truly special musical event – high-quality Canadian musicians – the Noam Lemish Quartet – will perform in the “Pegaza Living Room”. This visit to Latvia is a rare event, and the concert will become a unique opportunity to get to know the modern jazz sound from another continent in person, reports Viktorija Gaiķe.
The quartet will perform in Liepāja as part of the presentation tour of their latest album There’s Beauty Enough in Being Here.
Noam Lemiš is a pianist, composer and teacher nominated for the “Juno” music award, whose work combines jazz, classical music and the influences of various cultures. This concert will be his first visit to Latvia and Liepaja. He will be joined on stage by outstanding Canadian jazz artists: Juno Award-winning saxophonist Sundar Viswanathan, multiple Juno Award-winning double bassist Andrew Downing, and drummer Nick Fraser, one of the brightest personalities on the Toronto music scene.
Noam Lemish’s creative language freely crosses the boundaries between jazz, classical music and improvisation, creating a personal and contemporary sound.
“I am very happy for the opportunity to see Latvia with my own eyes,” admits Noam. “Honestly, I don’t know much about your country, but what I do know, I’ve learned from our bassist Andrew Downing, who has Latvian roots. I’m looking forward to learning more.”
Although the quartet has existed in this composition for a relatively short time, the musicians are united by more than ten years of cooperation, which turns into deep musical interplay, freedom and trust in the moment at concerts.
The album and program There’s Beauty Enough in Being Here is inspired by the poetry of the Portuguese poet Fernanda Pessoa and reminds us of the importance of presence – the beauty of being here and now. This idea resonates particularly organically with the nature of jazz as an art of improvisation.
This concert will be an unforgettable experience for jazz lovers as well as anyone who wants to experience authentic, contemporary and emotionally rich live music. After the concert part, the creative dialogue between musicians and listeners will continue in a jam session, where every jazz lover is invited to improvise on stage.
