The situation surrounding chikungunya infections remains worrying. The number of registered cases has risen from 312 last week to 509. Minister André Misiekaba of Health, Welfare and Labor will receive the full report tomorrow. This concerns infections in five districts. Further details from the most recent report will be shared.

During the press moment prior to the meeting of the Council of Ministers, the minister discussed the current state of affairs. Although infections have been reported in five districts, he believes that we should not speak of disaster areas.

According to the minister, the government is doing everything it can to keep the situation under control, although this is difficult. An essential part for effective control is still missing, namely the chemicals needed for spraying. This makes the approach more difficult.

Last week, the minister called on society to keep their own living environment clean, so that the mosquito responsible for the spread of the chikungunya virus cannot reproduce. He also recommends the use of mosquito nets and insect repellents for protection.

In addition to chikungunya, Misiekaba also discussed HIV infections in Suriname. Regarding financial resources, the minister indicated that the budget for 2026 is awaiting approval. Until it is approved, the options are limited.

Misiekaba welcomed the willingness of oil giant TotalEnergies to finance the ministry’s projects. In accordance with the agreements made, the ministry expects the company to approve the submitted project file in the short term.
