Dickinson Swimmer Breaks Record, Mavericks Fall to Century

Dickinson, ND – Senior swimmer Shain Louw of Dickinson High School continues to inspire his teammates and shatter records, demonstrating remarkable perseverance after overcoming a significant injury. Louw’s positive attitude and dedication have become hallmarks of the Dickinson Mavericks swim and dive team.
From Injury to Inspiration: Louw’s Journey
Louw is described by his coaches as a catalyst for positivity. He maintains a good mood even during challenging times, which is infectious and lifts the spirits of those around him. “I just like being in a good mood. I don’t like being down,” Louw explained. “I just like being in a good mood and the people around me being in a good mood.”
Louw’s senior year marks a significant comeback. Last season, a knee injury required two surgeries and sidelined him for several months. But, he returned to the pool determined and quickly became a vital component of the Dickinson High School (DHS) lineup.
Breaking Barriers in the Water
On February 7th, Louw first signaled his return to form, setting a new school record in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:01.60 at the Century Invite. News-USA Today. He set his sights on breaking the one-minute mark before the Mavericks’ final home dual of the season against Bismarck Century on February 13th.
While he didn’t quite reach his ambitious goal, Louw further refined his record, clocking in at an impressive 1:01.28 in the 100-yard breaststroke. The Dickinson Press. He attributed his success to a focused effort on his kick technique. “I was really just focusing on my kick and trying to create that good and powerful,” Louw said. “Strong kick, rapid, shoot out, so that I can cut as much time as possible.”
Team Success and Record-Breaking Relays
Louw’s impact extended beyond individual achievements. He played a crucial role in the Mavericks breaking the 200-yard medley relay record, finishing with a time of 1:42.06 – the opening event of the meet. News-USA Today.
Mavericks Face Tough Competition
Despite Louw’s strong performance, the Mavericks fell to Bismarck Century 109-67 on February 13th. The Dickinson Press. The Patriots outnumbered the Mavericks 30-19, presenting a significant challenge. DHS head coach Samie Bohl challenged her team to give their all despite the odds.
The Mavericks won five out of 12 events, with a surprise first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay, clocking in at 1:31.48. The Dickinson Press.
Looking Ahead
This meet also served as parents and seniors night, recognizing Louw and fellow seniors Bohdan Shevchenko, Mason Piatz, and Asher Ellerkamp. The Dickinson Press. The Mavericks will return to the pool on Thursday, February 19 for the Jamestown Duals, marking the final meet of the regular season before the WDA Tournament.
