Latvian Thriller “The Dark Border” Set for November 2026 Release
A new Latvian thriller, “The Dark Border,” is slated to premiere in cinemas in November 2026. The film, set in 1938, follows a counter-intelligence officer on a clandestine mission to a border town.
Plot Summary
The film centers on Baltais, an officer who assumes the identity of journalist Ilmar Blanka. His mission: to recover vital national security information and expose a Russian agent operating within Latvia. The narrative unfolds in a border town described as a space “like a narrow lane between two worlds,” where Baltais also investigates the mysterious murder of a woman he loves.
Production Details
Filming took place during the summer of 2025 in Riga and at Cinevilla, a cinema city transformed into a realistic border town complete with a post office, dairy, train station, and other period-appropriate buildings. This transformation was made possible by the financial support of DEPO, the film’s general sponsor. Baltais, known for its dairy products, is among the supporting companies.

The film features a prominent cast including Jēkabs Reinis, Vilis Daudziņš, Kaspars Zvīgulis, Elizabete Milta, Kaspars Znotiņš, and Santa Breikša. Andrejs Īkis directs the film.
