Virginia Beach to Extend Curfew for Unaccompanied Minors
Virginia Beach is set to expand its curfew for unaccompanied minors, shifting the start time from 11 p.m. To 10 p.m. The change, approved by the City Council, will take effect 30 days from Tuesday, February 17, 2026.
Details of the Curfew
The curfew, which has been in place for over 40 years, will remain in effect until 5 a.m. Daily. The ordinance applies to individuals under the age of 18. Exceptions to the curfew include:
- Emergencies
- Traveling directly to or from lawful employment
- Attending a specified engagement or performance
- Participating in religious services
- Engaging in any assembly or expressive activity protected by the First Amendment
- Interstate travel with a beginning and/or ending point in Virginia Beach
Enforcement and Penalties
According to the ordinance, parents or guardians who allow or encourage a minor to violate the curfew may be charged with a Class 4 misdemeanor. The change was requested by the Virginia Beach Police Department to help maintain a safe environment for residents and visitors, particularly during the upcoming resort season.
