Democratic Party Divisions Emerge Over Kim Yong’s Book Event Attendance

Controversy is brewing within the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) regarding Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon’s planned attendance at a book launch event for Kim Yong, a close aide to President Lee Jae-myung. The event, celebrating Kim Yong’s publication of “The Usefulness of the President – Lee Jae-myung’s Time Recorded by Kim Yong,” has sparked criticism from within the DPK, centering on questions of political reconciliation and past support during Kim Yong’s legal battles.

Criticism from Within the DPK

Kim Ji-ho, spokesperson for the DPK, publicly criticized Governor Kim’s intention to attend the event, questioning whether a display of “humane duties” was extended to Kim Yong while he was undergoing legal proceedings. Kim Ji-ho posted on Facebook, stating that “humanity comes before the frame of self-reconciliation,” and raised concerns about whether Governor Kim offered support or visits to Kim Yong during his imprisonment as reported by MSN.

This criticism echoes concerns raised by other party members, including Han Joon-ho, a DPK member, who stated that “comrades are not political decorations,” and Lim Yun-tae, former vice-chairman of the DPK’s policy committee, who expressed dismay at the perceived employ of the event for political purposes according to the Chosun Ilbo.

Kim Yong’s Legal Background and Event Attendance

Kim Yong, former vice president of the Democratic Research Institute and a long-time associate of President Lee Jae-myung, was found guilty in both his first and second trials of receiving illegal political funds during President Lee’s presidential primary campaign and accepting bribes related to the Daejang-dong development project. He was sentenced to five years in prison and released on bail in August as reported by Sedaily. Despite his ongoing legal challenges, Kim Yong has been holding nationwide book publication events, attended by numerous Democratic Party of Korea lawmakers as noted by the Chosun Ilbo.

Governor Kim’s Initiative and Concerns Over Political Signaling

Spokesperson Kim Ji-ho emphasized that the meeting was initiated by Governor Kim himself, not by Kim Yong, cautioning against interpreting the attendance as a reciprocal gesture or assigning excessive political significance. The core of the criticism revolves around the timing of Governor Kim’s outreach, questioning why support wasn’t offered during Kim Yong’s imprisonment according to MSN.

Upcoming Event and Continued Debate

Governor Kim Dong-yeon is scheduled to attend Kim Yong’s publication ceremony at the Gyeonggi Arts Center in Suwon on February 20th. The event continues to fuel debate within the DPK, with concerns that it is being used as a political event rather than a genuine expression of support. Spokesperson Kim Ji-ho concluded by expressing hope that the meeting will resolve humanely rather than becoming another political spectacle.
