Tom Noonan, Character Actor Known for Roles in ‘Manhunter’ and ‘RoboCop 2,’ Dies at 74
Tom Noonan, the prolific American actor, director, and screenwriter celebrated for his imposing presence and memorable performances in films like Heat, RoboCop 2, and Manhunter, died on February 14, 2026, at the age of 74.
The news was confirmed by Fred Dekker, director of The Monster Squad (1987), in which Noonan played Frankenstein’s Monster. The cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.
“With great sadness I announce the death of Tom Noonan,” Dekker wrote on social media. “Tom’s unforgettable performance as Frankenstein in The Monster Squad is one of the highlights of my modest filmography, no doubt thanks to the masterful makeup designed by Stan Winston, sculpted by Tom Woodruff Jr. And applied by Zoltan Elek.”
Dekker recalled wanting Noonan for the role of Francis Dollarhyde in Michael Mann’s Manhunter (1986), stating, “Impressed by his portrayal of Francis Dollarhyde in Manhunter, desperately wanted Tom to read the script and consider the role, but knew that landing him was probably a longshot. However, he agreed to meet with me at his Hollywood apartment to talk about the role.” He further described Noonan as a “proverbial gentleman and scholar” and lamented “the loss of a great talent.”
Early Life and Career Beginnings
Born on April 12, 1951, in Greenwich, Connecticut, Noonan was the son of Rita (McGannon), a mathematics teacher, and John Noonan Sr., a jazz musician and dentist. He received training at the Yale School of Drama. Noonan began his theatrical career in 1978 with Sam Shepard’s ‘Buried Child.’ His height, approaching two meters, and distinctive intensity quickly drew attention, leading to film roles in Heaven’s Gate (1980) and Wolfen (1981).
Breakthrough Roles and Villainous Persona
Noonan’s breakthrough came with his portrayal of Francis Dollarhyde, the “Tooth Fairy” serial killer, in Michael Mann’s Manhunter (1986), marking the first cinematic depiction of a villain from the Hannibal Lecter universe. This role cemented his reputation for playing menacing and psychologically complex characters.
He continued to embody villainous roles throughout the 1980s and 1990s, including Frankenstein’s Monster in The Monster Squad (1987), Cain in RoboCop 2 (1990), The Ripper in Last Action Hero (1993), and Kelso in Heat (1995). His unique physicality and unsettling gaze made him a favorite among directors seeking actors who could convey both physical and psychological threat.
Beyond Acting: Directing and Writing
Noonan was not only a talented actor but also a skilled writer, director, and editor. He wrote, directed, starred in, and edited What Happened Was… (1994), which won the Dramatic Grand Jury Prize and the Waldo Salt Award for Best Screenplay at the Sundance Film Festival.
Later Career and Voice Function
In later years, Noonan took on roles in critically acclaimed films such as Charlie Kaufman’s Synecdoche, New York (2008) and The House of the Devil (2009). He also lent his distinctive voice to numerous projects, most notably voicing nearly all the secondary characters in Kaufman’s animated film Anomalisa (2015). He appeared in television series including Damages, Hell on Wheels, The Blacklist, and 12 Monkeys.
His final film role was in The Museum of Wonders (2017).
