Indonesia Prioritizes Peace Diplomacy Amidst Rising Global Tensions

Jakarta – As global tensions escalate in early 2026, Indonesia is emphasizing the critical need for more effective and peace-oriented diplomacy. This call to action comes from Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR), Puan Maharani, who highlighted rising international conflicts and escalating trade wars as key disruptors to global stability and economic growth.

The Imperative of International Cooperation

Maharani stressed that in an increasingly interconnected world, no nation can ensure its safety or progress in isolation. “In an interconnected world, no nation can stand alone and be safe. Global stability can only be achieved through cooperation,” she stated during a closing plenary session of the DPR on February 19, 2026. She further emphasized that international cooperation is not merely desirable, but essential for national advancement.

A Framework Built on Shared Values

The foundation of modern international cooperation, according to Maharani, rests on shared norms and commitments. These encompass economic standards focused on competitiveness and sustainability, social values that uphold human dignity, and democratic principles and human rights as the cornerstone of civilized political systems. She argued that development should be measured not solely by economic growth, but by the quality of life and social justice experienced by citizens.

Strengthening Indonesia’s Global Position

Recognizing the interconnectedness of the world, Maharani asserted that Indonesia must bolster its national resilience and competitiveness to secure a strong position in the global order. This includes actively engaging in foreign policy based on the principle of free and active politics.

DPR Focus Areas

The DPR has been actively responding to strategic issues, including ensuring integrity in national economic management, pursuing legal reform, enhancing social protection in healthcare, and conducting foreign policy aligned with the principle of free and active politics. The DPR is also focused on issues such as reform of customs and excise, mental health, and protection of children from online grooming threats.

Recess Period for DPR

Following the closing of the third session period of 2025-2026 on February 19, 2026, the DPR has entered a recess period that will last until March 9, 2026.

Indonesia’s Role in Gaza

Indonesia is also prioritizing its role within the Board of Peace, particularly concerning the resolution of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
