Milan Malpensa Airport Runway Closure to Impact Flights Through May 2026
Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) is preparing for significant infrastructure work that will temporarily reduce its operational capacity. From March 16 to May 9, 2026, runway 35L/17R will be closed for resurfacing and upgrades, prompting airlines to shift some flights to Milan Linate Airport (LIN).
Runway Closure Details
The closure of runway 35L/17R will last approximately eight weeks. During this period, Malpensa will operate with a single runway, reducing the overall number of flights it can handle. The work includes resurfacing the runway, upgrading taxiway shoulders, and installing new LED lighting compatible with the EU’s Digital NOTAM system. VisaHQ reports the project is a €40-million investment designed to prepare the airport for increased traffic during the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games the following year.
Impact on Flights and Passengers
To mitigate disruption, some flights, particularly Schengen-area routes, will be redirected to Milan Linate. SEA Milan Airports and Italy’s civil aviation authority ENAC anticipate up to eight additional Schengen flights per hour will be moved to Linate. Passengers should carefully check their flight details and airport assignments in the weeks leading up to their travel dates, as some flights normally scheduled at Malpensa may now depart from Linate. The Flight Club highlights the importance of verifying airport information.
Linate Airport Capacity Increase
Linate’s capacity will be temporarily increased from its usual 18 movements per hour to accommodate the redirected flights. The increase, up to 8 additional movements per hour, will be limited to Schengen flights operated by narrow-body aircraft. VisaHQ notes that the increased capacity at Linate is being utilized partially, with approximately two additional movements per hour currently scheduled during specific time slots.
Travel Considerations
Travelers should anticipate potential changes to itineraries, longer minimum connection times at Malpensa, and increased demand for parking at Linate. VisaHQ advises that security queues at Linate may lengthen due to the anticipated increase in passenger volume (approximately 1.2 million additional passengers during the 55-day period). ENAC recommends that premium travelers arrive at least 90 minutes before departure, even for domestic flights.
Ongoing Operations and Minimizing Disruption
Despite the runway closure, Malpensa will remain operational using its second runway. Authorities have coordinated with airlines and air navigation service providers to manage operations and minimize disruption. Work will be conducted 24/7 to expedite the completion of the project. The Flight Club reports that the planning involved ENAC, SEA, ENAV, Assoclearance, and the airlines.
