Georgian authorities have detained two foreign nationals for allegedly attempting to purchase uranium and cesium-137, with a combined value of $3 million (approximately €2,549,760). The State Security Service of Georgia (SSS) announced the arrests on Thursday, February 19, 2026, stating the individuals were apprehended by counterintelligence agents and the Department of Special Operations.

Details of the Arrest and Alleged Plot

According to Lasha Magradze, First Deputy Head of the State Security Service of Georgia, the detainees planned to transport the radioactive substances to an unspecified foreign country. Magradze indicated the individuals had made multiple trips to Georgia in recent weeks, actively working to acquire and transport the nuclear and radioactive materials. He further stated that the seized substances “are routinely used for terrorist purposes.”

This incident follows a similar case in 2025, where Georgian security forces arrested three foreign nationals attempting to purchase two kilograms of uranium for $400,000 (approximately €340,419.74).

Investigation and Potential Penalties

The investigation is ongoing, and the nationalities of the detained individuals have not been disclosed. Under Georgian law, those convicted in this case face potential prison sentences of up to 10 years.
