Uber Launches Free Northern Lights Viewing Rides in Finland
This March, Uber is offering a unique experience in Finnish Lapland: free guided Northern Lights viewing rides through its app. The initiative aims to make the sought-after Aurora Borealis more accessible to both locals and tourists.
Uber Aurora: Chasing the Lights
Dubbed Uber Aurora, the service will operate around the spring equinox – March 20 and 21 – a period known for heightened Northern Lights activity. Uber is collaborating with local experience provider Arctic GM, whose guides will lead the expeditions.
What to Expect on an Uber Aurora Ride
The six to eight-hour tours include pick-up and drop-off in Rovaniemi, guided Aurora viewing, snacks, and hot beverages. According to Uber, the experience is free of charge, despite similar tours often carrying a high price tag, especially during peak season.
How to Book
Bookings open in the Uber app on March 5 at 14:00 CET (2:00 PM CET). Users should navigate to ‘Account’ then ‘Inbox’ and follow the provided link to make a reservation. Spaces are limited, so early booking is recommended. The Daily Mail reports that the rides will be available on the weekend of the spring equinox.
A Favorable Year for Aurora Viewing
2026 is anticipated to be an exceptional year for viewing the Northern Lights due to increased solar activity. Uber’s Country Manager for Finland, Sanni Nummi, stated, “The Northern Lights are one of the world’s most iconic bucket-list experiences… With Uber Aurora, we’re proud to aid more visitors and locals witness this extraordinary natural phenomenon.”
The Science Behind the Lights
The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are formed when electrically charged particles from the sun collide with the Earth’s magnetic field. Guides will share insights into this phenomenon and offer photography tips during the tours.
