Des Moines Police Shooting: Security Officer Critical, Suspect Dead After Stabbing at Life Services Center
Des Moines, Iowa – A 24-year-old man died after being shot by Des Moines police officers following a stabbing incident at the Polk County Life Services Center on February 20, 2026. A security officer remains in critical condition after being attacked. The incident occurred around 4:00 p.m. At 1914 Carpenter Avenue.
Details of the Incident
According to Sergeant Paul Parizek, Public Information Officer for the Des Moines Police Department, officers responded to reports of a stabbing at the Broadlawns Crisis Observation Center [1]. Upon arrival, officers encountered the suspect holding a knife. Initial attempts to de-escalate the situation involved the deployment of a taser, which proved ineffective. The suspect continued to advance toward the officers, leading them to open fire [1].
“There was an attempt to de-escalate that situation,” stated Sergeant Parizek. “We realize there was a Taser deployed, and unfortunately, that person advanced on those officers and was shot by them.” [1] The suspect reportedly made statements indicating he would not surrender.
Medical Response and Current Status
Officers immediately provided first aid to both the suspect and the 22-year-old security officer [1]. Both were transported to nearby hospitals in critical condition. The suspect later died from his injuries, while the security officer remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Investigation and Administrative Leave
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the incident and the officers’ use of force. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in such cases [1]. Police are also investigating a video of the incident circulating on social media.
“Right now, we understand that it’s a terrible tragedy for a lot of people involved,” said Sergeant Parizek [1].
