Alex Steeves Finds His Footing with Bruins, Eyes Strong Finish to Rookie Season

BOSTON –– Alex Steeves, the 26-year-vintage forward for the Boston Bruins, has quickly become a valuable asset after being recalled from Providence in November. Having already surpassed his previous career-high in games played, Steeves is embracing the challenges and opportunities of his rookie season in the NHL.

Adapting to the NHL Pace

Before this season, Steeves had played a maximum of seven games in a single NHL campaign. Now, with the Bruins having completed their schedule leading into the Olympic break, he’s appeared in 38 games. This increased workload and the demanding NHL schedule have required an adjustment for the young forward.

“I think it’s really important [to rest],” Steeves said. “The schedule has been a bear, and it’s going to be a bear right when we pick back up here. As players, you get used to it, but you also fight to avoid things like burnout and fatigue and stuff like that.”

Steeves emphasized the importance of the two-week break for both physical and mental recovery, aiming to return reinvigorated for a strong finish to the season. He acknowledged the unique challenges faced by rookies like himself, alongside teammates Fraser Minten and Jonathan Aspirot, as they navigate their first full NHL seasons.

Rookie Impact and Future Outlook

Steeves, Minten, and Aspirot have each demonstrated their ability to contribute to the Bruins’ success in their respective roles. Head coach Marco Sturm believes the break will be particularly beneficial for the rookies, providing a chance to regroup and prepare for the final stretch of the season.

“I think it’s really good for them. It’s almost like a summer break for them. Regroup. Now they know exactly what to expect, and that’s why I’m going to keep it very similar to training camp, so there are no questions anymore. Now they’re actually just free; just play the game. They know exactly what to do,” Sturm said. “It’s a lot of them, being consistent. I think it’s the biggest challenge you have as a young kid. Guys did, a really good job.”

In January, Steeves signed a two-year contract extension with the Bruins, signaling the team’s confidence in his potential. NHL.com reports that Steeves was signed as a free agent by Toronto in 2021 before joining Boston.
