Canada’s Olympic Hopes Dwindle as Thompson, Phelan, and Schmidt Fall Short in Ski Cross

Livigno, Italy – Canada’s medal aspirations in ski cross took a hit on Friday at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games, as Marielle Thompson, Brittany Phelan, and Hannah Schmidt all failed to advance past the quarterfinal stage. The unexpected outcome marks the first time Canada will not secure a podium finish in the event since its Olympic debut at Vancouver 2010.

Thompson’s Title Defense Stalled

Marielle Thompson, entering the Games as a strong favorite following her gold medal in 2014 and silver in 2022, was eliminated in her first quarterfinal heat. The 33-year-old was defeated by Daniela Maier of Germany and Marielle Berger Sabbatel of France. Thompson carried the Canadian flag during the Opening Ceremony alongside Mikaël Kingsbury, adding to the weight of expectations.

Phelan and Schmidt Unable to Advance

Phelan and Schmidt competed in the third quarterfinal, but were also unsuccessful in their bids for a medal. They were overtaken by Switzerland’s Franny Smith and France’s Jade Grillet Aubert, ending their Olympic journey in the quarterfinal round.

Maier Claims Gold

Daniela Maier ultimately secured the gold medal in the women’s ski cross event. Franny Smith took silver, and Sandra Naeslund of Sweden earned the bronze.

Canadian Struggles Continue in Aerials

The disappointment for Canada extended beyond ski cross, as Lewis Irving and Emile Nadeau also fell short in the men’s aerials competition. Both athletes finished just outside the qualifying positions for the final, placing seventh and ninth, respectively.

Mixed Team Event Offers Final Chance

Canada’s final opportunity to secure an aerials medal will come in the mixed-team event, scheduled for Saturday. Irving previously contributed to a bronze medal win in the mixed-team event at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, ending a 20-year drought for Canada in the sport. Nadeau will also be competing in his second Olympic Games.

The men’s ski-cross event is set to take place on Saturday in Italy.
