Currently, polygenic embryo selection is financially inaccessible to most Americans. It requires in vitro fertilization (IVF), which can cost tens of thousands of dollars per cycle and is not covered by Medicaid. Adding genetic testing for each embryo further increases the financial burden.

As the technology improves, the existing wealth gap in the United States could translate into biological inequalities, with affluent families having the means to “optimize” their offspring.
