‘Sbormistr’ Film to Rename Main Character Following Controversy
The creators of the Czech film Sbormistr (Broken Voices in English) have decided to change the name of the main character for future screenings. This decision comes after a victim of the real-life case that inspired the film recognized herself in the character, due in part to the apply of the same first name.
Responding to Victim’s Concerns
Production company Endorfilm, along with the film’s co-producers and director/screenwriter Ondřej Provazník, made the decision to rename the character. The move aims to prevent further distress and ensure public discussion focuses on child protection and preventing abuse of power according to a statement.
Film Inspired by Real-Life Case
Sbormistr draws inspiration from the case of Bohumil Kulínský, a convicted child molester and former choir director. Despite being a fictional work inspired by real events, the filmmakers acknowledge the potential for unintended connections between the film and the experiences of victims as reported by Deník N.
Efforts at Resolution
Endorfilm stated that the film is a fictional artistic work and not a depiction of any specific individual’s story. Producers previously expressed regret that the film had caused psychological distress to some real-life victims. The company also revealed that previous attempts at reaching a settlement with the affected individual were unsuccessful, with demands including a substantial financial compensation and a ban on television broadcasts of the film as detailed by ČTK.
Technical Challenges of the Change
Renaming the main character presents technical and creative challenges for a completed film. The production team intends to make the change without compromising the overall quality and impact of the movie according to reports. The new name will be chosen to feel natural and avoid any association with individuals involved in the real-life case.
