Laya Healthcare Announces Further Premium Increases for 65 Plans
Laya Healthcare is increasing the prices of 65 of its health insurance policies by an average of 4.7%, equating to roughly €80 per adult annually. The price adjustments will take effect from April 1st, 2026, coinciding with renewal dates.
Third Price Hike in a Year
This marks the third price increase from Laya Healthcare within a year. In October 2025, premiums rose by an average of 4.5%, and in April 2025, policies were hiked by 6.6%. RTÉ reports that some plans could see increases of up to 9%.
Impact on Customers
Approximately 700,000 customers are affected by these changes. While 65 plans will see an increase, 37 plans will remain at the same price. Laya Healthcare is also retiring 16 older plans, offering affected members alternative plans at renewal. However, the Health Insurance Authority (HIA) emphasizes that policyholders are not obligated to accept the replacement plan and are free to choose any plan on the market.
Cost Estimates
Dermot Goode, Director of Health Insurance Ireland, estimates the increase will cost adults between €62 and €217 annually, depending on their current plan. For families with mid-level schemes, the additional cost could range from €148 to €203 per year.
Rising Healthcare Costs and Benefit Changes
Laya Healthcare attributes the price increases to rising healthcare costs, particularly a 10% to 15% increase in claims volume and cost from private hospitals. Goode notes a trend of individuals utilizing private healthcare options, potentially straining insurance costs.
approximately 30 of Laya’s most popular schemes are undergoing benefit changes, with some policyholders potentially facing higher premiums for reduced coverage.
Industry-Wide Increases
Laya Healthcare’s price hikes follow similar increases from other Irish health insurers, including Vhi, Irish Life Health, and Level Health. Goode suggests a pattern of price adjustments occurring in January (Irish Life), March (VHI), and April (Laya), with potential further increases in October.
Consumer Advice
The HIA advises consumers to review their plans at every renewal, comparing options to locate the best value and coverage. The HIA’s chief executive, Brian Lee, emphasized the importance of consumers making informed decisions about their health insurance, particularly given rising costs.
