Dim Indoor Light, Not Just Screens, May Be Driving Myopia Epidemic
For years, rising rates of nearsightedness, or myopia, have been largely attributed to increased screen time, particularly among children and young adults. However, emerging research suggests the explanation may be more nuanced. Scientists now believe a combination of prolonged close-up focus and dim indoor lighting may be a key factor in the development of myopia.
The Growing Problem of Myopia
Myopia has reached near-epidemic levels worldwide. Nearly 50 percent of young adults in the United States and Europe are affected, with rates climbing as high as 90 percent in parts of East Asia. 1 While genetics play a role, the rapid increase in myopia over recent generations indicates environmental factors are also critical.
How Indoor Lighting Impacts Vision
A new study published in Cell Reports proposes that myopia may be driven less by screens themselves and more by a common indoor visual habit: prolonged close-up focus in low-light environments. 1 This limits the amount of light reaching the retina. When we concentrate on nearby objects in low light, our pupils constrict, potentially triggering changes that lead to nearsightedness. 2
The Role of Retinal Light and Eye Focus
Researchers at the SUNY College of Optometry suggest that the amount of light reaching the retina during sustained near work – particularly indoors – is a common underlying factor in myopia progression. 1 This new hypothesis could help explain why various factors – near work, dim lighting, atropine drops, multifocal lenses, and time spent outdoors – all appear to influence myopia.
What the Research Shows
Scientists have long observed that:
- Spending more time outdoors appears to protect against myopia.
- Extended near work is associated with increased risk.
- Treatments like atropine eye drops, multifocal lenses, and contrast-reducing optics can slow progression.
The challenge has been understanding why these diverse approaches work. The new research suggests it may all come down to retinal light exposure.

“Myopia has reached near-epidemic levels worldwide, yet we still don’t fully understand why,” said Jose-Manuel Alonso, MD, PhD, SUNY Distinguished Professor and senior author of the study. 1 Further research is needed to fully understand the complex interplay between light exposure, eye focus, and myopia development. However, these findings highlight the importance of ensuring adequate lighting during near work and encouraging more time outdoors.
