KZN Police Sergeants Arrested for Extortion in Amaoti

Two KwaZulu-Natal police sergeants have been arrested on charges of extortion, accused of targeting illegal shebeen operators and illicit cigarette traders in the Amaoti area, north of Durban. The arrests, made by the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit on Friday, February 20, 2026, follow months of alleged illegal activity and a dramatic incident where community members apprehended the officers.

Extortion Scheme Details

According to police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the sergeants allegedly approached victims, identified themselves as police officials and presented authentic police identification cards, and firearms. They then demanded money in exchange for avoiding arrest. News24 and IOL reported on these allegations.

Community Intervention and Initial Response

On January 14, 2026, residents of Amaoti took matters into their own hands, apprehending the two officers, disarming them, and taking them to the Amaoti satellite police station. Yet, community members were allegedly redirected to the Inanda police station to open criminal cases. Upon arriving at Inanda, they were reportedly told there was no record of the incident and the officers had not been brought in. The Witness detailed this sequence of events.

Ongoing Investigations

Following the community’s attempt to report the incident, the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit took over the investigation, leading to the arrest of the two sergeants. One of the arrested sergeants is stationed at Inanda police station, and the other at the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court. SurgeZirc too reported on the arrests.

A separate investigation is underway against other police officers accused of assisting the sergeants in evading justice, specifically for allegedly failing to open a case and assisting in their escape from the Amaoti satellite police station.

Official Response

KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, emphasized the commitment to rooting out corruption within the police service. He stated that those involved in criminal activity would face arrest and internal disciplinary processes. Mkhwanazi also thanked the Amaoti community for their intervention and apologized for the initial mishandling of the situation.

Upcoming Court Appearance

The two sergeants are expected to appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court on Monday on four counts of extortion. Police have indicated that additional charges may be filed as more victims approach forward.
