Redmond Proficiency Academy’s Theater Program Shines, Sending 22 Students to State

Published February 21, 2026

Redmond Proficiency Academy (RPA) is celebrating a significant achievement for its theater program, qualifying 22 students for the Oregon Thespians State Festival in Salem this April. The success follows a regional competition co-hosted with Summit High School on February 7, where 29 RPA students participated across 37 performance pieces.

Regional Success and State Qualification

RPA distinguished itself as the top-performing school in Central Oregon, securing spots for 22 students in 11 diverse performance categories, ranging from large group performances to solo musical pieces, and pantomime. The program also earned five regional finalist recognitions. Summit High School followed with the second-highest number of qualifiers, sending four students to the state competition.

Open Enrollment and Community Access

Kate Torcom, RPA’s theater director, emphasized the inclusive nature of the program. “Anybody can be a part of our theater department; they just have to be a student at RPA,” Torcom stated. She highlighted the open enrollment period, currently underway, encouraging students of all experience levels to join. “Open enrollment is going on now — it’s two weeks long. It’s available for anyone who wants to approach and join the department, because a lot of our kids haven’t been doing theater their entire lives. They learn here.”

Upcoming Performance: “High School Musical”

In addition to the state competition, RPA’s theater group is preparing for a public performance of “High School Musical” at the McClay Theatre for the Performing Arts, scheduled to begin in March.
