French Alps Set to Host the 2030 Winter Olympics
The French Alps will host the 2030 Winter Olympics, marking the fourth time France has hosted the Winter Games. The event is scheduled to take place from February 1 to February 17, 2030, followed by the Paralympic Winter Games from March 1 to March 10, 2030. This selection continues a trend toward regionalizing the Games, following the model used in Milan Cortina 2026.
A Regional Approach
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has shifted away from single-city hosts, opting for a more regional model. The French Alps will utilize a similar approach to Milan Cortina, spreading competitions across the southwest region of France . Many venues already exist, including those used during the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville.
Competition Zones
The Games will be divided into four main zones:
- Nice Zone: Will host indoor ice events, including hockey, figure skating, short track, speed skating, and curling. The Allianz Riviera, previously used for Olympic soccer during the Paris 2024 Summer Games, will be converted into two ice rinks.
- Savoie Zone: Considered the heart of the Alps, this zone will host Alpine skiing, ski jumping, bobsled, luge, and skeleton.
- Haute-Savoie Zone: Located in the northern Alps, this zone will be the site for cross-country skiing and biathlon.
- Briancon Zone: Situated in the southern Alps, this zone will host freestyle skiing and snowboarding.
France’s Olympic History
France has hosted the Olympic Games six times, including three Winter Games. Prior to the French Alps 2030, France hosted the Winter Olympics in Chamonix (1924), Grenoble (1968), and Albertville (1992). The most recent Summer Games were held in Paris in 2024.
Looking Ahead
Following the handover of the Olympic flag from Milan Cortina, the French Alps are preparing to welcome the world in 2030. The Games promise to showcase the beauty and athleticism of the French Alps while continuing the IOC’s move towards a more sustainable and regionally integrated Olympic experience.
