Robert Vargas: Los Angeles Artist on Track to Break World Record with Monumental Mural

Robert Vargas, a Boyle Heights-born artist, is poised to enter the Guinness World Records for creating the largest mural by a single artist. His expansive artwork, “Angelus,” currently in progress at Pershing Square in Downtown Los Angeles, spans over 60,000 square feet.

A Lifelong Passion for Art

Vargas, a sixth-generation Mexican-American, has been dedicated to painting throughout his life. He is widely recognized for his murals across Los Angeles, including the “L.A. Rising” mural featuring Shohei Ohtani on the Miyako Hotel in Little Tokyo, which appeared on the cover of Los Angeles magazine’s December issue.

Community Recognition

Vargas’ contributions to the arts and community have been formally acknowledged by the city of Los Angeles. September 8th has been designated as Robert Vargas Day and he has been awarded Robert Vargas Square in Boyle Heights. His previous works include “Our Lady of DTLA” (2013) at Spring and Sixth Streets, “Fernandomania Forever” near Mariachi Plaza in Boyle Heights, and “Nourishing the Community” on the Project Angel Food Vine Street headquarters.

“Angelus” and Future Projects

The “Angelus” mural at Pershing Square has been a multi-year undertaking. Vargas anticipates completing the record-breaking mural and presenting it to the Los Angeles community. Looking ahead to 2026, Vargas plans to create a Dodgers mural in Torrance and continue his international travels, including planned trips to Europe and Japan, building on his visits to Paris, London, Venice, Italy, and Brazil last year.

Accessibility and Impact of Public Art

Vargas emphasizes the unique accessibility of public art, particularly murals. He believes that open-air galleries allow art to reach a broader audience, including those who may not frequent traditional gallery spaces. He also highlights the human connection fostered by witnessing the creation of murals firsthand. Los Angeles Magazine reports Vargas stating, “The process is very, very accessible as well. So I think that people get to also feel like they’re a part of seeing something through and witnessing the work happen firsthand, so it really humanizes the built environment.”

Recent Works Reflect Community Stories

Beyond the large-scale “Angelus” project, Vargas has focused on murals that reflect local experiences. He created “Heroes” for the L.A. Art Show, honoring first responders involved in the Eaton fire, and “From the Ashes” in Altadena, depicting the stories of residents who lost their homes.

ArtCenter College of Design Honorary Doctorate

In April 2024, Robert Vargas was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from ArtCenter College of Design and delivered the commencement address at their spring graduation ceremony.
