Two-Day Oatmeal Diet Significantly Lowers Cholesterol, Study Finds
A short-term, calorie-restricted diet centered around oatmeal can lead to a substantial and lasting reduction in cholesterol levels, according to latest research from the University of Bonn. Oatmeal’s Historical Role in Metabolic Health

The Study Design and Findings
Researchers investigated the impact of an oat-based diet on individuals with metabolic syndrome – a condition characterized by obesity, high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar and lipid metabolism disorders, increasing the risk of type 2 diabetes. Thirty-two participants consumed 300 grams of oatmeal, boiled in water with limited additions of fruits or vegetables, three times a day for two days, reducing their caloric intake by about half. A control group followed a similarly calorie-restricted diet without oats.
The results showed that the group consuming oatmeal experienced a 10% reduction in LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. Participants on the oat diet also experienced modest improvements in blood pressure and lost an average of two kilograms (approximately 4.4 pounds).
The Gut Microbiome Connection
The study suggests that the cholesterol-lowering effects of oats are linked to changes in the gut microbiome. Consuming oats appears to increase the number of beneficial gut bacteria, which then produce phenolic compounds, including ferulic acid. A two-day regimen of 300 grams of oatmeal yielded better results than a six-week course of 80 grams per day.
