The European Parliament will convene an emergency session today, February 24, 2026, to commemorate four years since the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will address the Parliament remotely from Kyiv, underscoring the European Union’s continued commitment to Ukraine’s defense and future.

European Parliament member Sandra Kalniete emphasized the significant support provided by European nations to Ukraine, particularly in light of recent developments regarding US military aid. Even if one country is currently blocking the start of negotiations. We must be creative and politically courageous,” she stated. She proposed a “reverse enlargement process,” where Ukraine would gradually assume the rights and obligations of EU membership as it progresses through the negotiation chapters, ultimately achieving full membership.

The Group of Friends of Ukraine within the European Parliament released a joint statement commemorating the fourth anniversary of the Russian invasion. The MEPs acknowledged twelve years of Russian aggression, beginning with attempts to undermine Ukraine’s sovereign choice to integrate with Europe and the illegal occupation of Crimea and parts of the Donbas region.
