Armed Intruder at Mar-a-Lago and Trump’s Reaction

President Donald Trump addressed an attempted security breach at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, on February 22, 2026, stating that “many people” “resent” him. The incident involved an armed man who entered the secure perimeter of the property.

Details of the Incident

Austin Tucker Martin, 21, was shot and killed by the Secret Service after being detected within the secure area of Mar-a-Lago. Martin was reportedly carrying a rifle and a can of gasoline. Trump, who was at the White House at the time of the incident, was not directly threatened.

Trump’s Response

Speaking at a ceremony at the White House, Trump remarked on the intrusion, suggesting that only “important people” are targeted in such attacks. He referenced the assassinations of former Presidents Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy, stating they “were important,” and jokingly questioned whether he should strive to be “a little less important.”

Previous Security Concerns

This incident is not the first time President Trump has been the target of potential threats. In September 2024, a man was killed by the Secret Service after approaching Trump with an assault rifle at his golf club. During a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on July 13, Trump was reportedly struck in the ear by a projectile.

Mar-a-Lago’s History and Security

Mar-a-Lago, originally built in 1927 by cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post, was donated to the U.S. Government in 1973 with the intention of it being used as a “winter White House.” The estate, a 128-room mansion on 20 acres, was later returned to the Post Foundation in 1981 due to high maintenance costs. During Trump’s presidency, Mar-a-Lago was frequently referred to as the “Southern White House.”

In 2022 and 2023, Mar-a-Lago was the subject of an FBI investigation related to the alleged mishandling of classified documents, with a search warrant executed and over 33 boxes of documents seized.
