Prime Minister Kim Emphasizes Party-Government Unity Amidst Potential Leadership Challenge

Prime Minister Kim Min-seok underscored the importance of complete harmony between the ruling Democratic Party and the government, stating that national administration can only succeed through such unity. He made these remarks during a ‘K-Government Briefing’ held in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, on February 24, 2026, at the invitation of the North Chungcheong Province chapter of the Democratic Party of Korea.

Call for Unity and Potential Leadership Implications

Prime Minister Kim stated, “Only by perfect unity can one succeed in coming back to power, and the party can similarly grow and develop.” This statement comes as some supporters of the ruling party have voiced criticism regarding what they perceive as a disconnect between the party and the Lee Jae-myung administration, a sentiment referred to as ‘self politics.’

The Prime Minister’s comments are particularly noteworthy given the potential for a leadership challenge within the Democratic Party. Representative Chung Cheong-rae, a potential rival to Prime Minister Kim for the party leadership at the November convention, was present at the briefing. Kim referred to Chung as a “party leader” and acknowledged his potential bid for a second term.

Prime Minister Kim highlighted various achievements of the Lee Jae-myung administration, emphasizing the role of the Democratic Party in safeguarding Korean democracy. He also shared a personal anecdote, stating that President Lee Jae-myung frequently works late into the night and even sends text messages around 2:00 AM, demonstrating his dedication to governance. He recounted receiving a reply text message even while undergoing treatment.

Inter-Korean Relations and Potential US Involvement

Addressing the inter-Korean issue, Prime Minister Kim expressed concern over North Korea’s lack of engagement in improving relations. However, he remained optimistic, stating, “Things will turn around.” He believes the key to resolving the issue lies with the United States and noted a strong perceived willingness from the US to address relations with North Korea.

He referenced previous attempts by US President Trump to meet with Kim Jong-un and speculated about a potential opportunity for another meeting during President Trump’s scheduled visit to China in February 2026. Prime Minister Kim affirmed his commitment to consistently pursuing dialogue with North Korea.

Administrative Integration and Regional Development

Regarding the ongoing administrative integration process, Prime Minister Kim noted that while initial discussions focused on the integration of Daejeon and Chungnam, similar efforts are underway in Gwangju and Jeonnam, as well as Daegu and Gyeongbuk. He criticized the People Power Party for opposing integration in the Daejeon and Chungnam regions.

Concerning the possibility of North Chungcheong Province participating in administrative integration, Prime Minister Kim acknowledged public opinion leaning towards exploring a “special” path, but emphasized that the final decision rests with the citizens of the province.

Prime Minister Kim shared a personal connection to North Chungcheong Province, jokingly mentioning that he had an address there for several years due to his time spent in a Cheongju prison while involved in the student movement for democratization.
