James Harden to Play Through Right Thumb Fracture; Cavaliers Face Backcourt Challenges
Cleveland Cavaliers guard James Harden will play through a non-displaced fracture in his right thumb, the team announced Wednesday, despite being ruled out of their 118-116 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks. The injury occurred during Tuesday night’s 109-94 win over the New York Knicks.
Harden’s Injury and Treatment Plan
X-rays revealed the fracture, but Harden has been evaluated by a hand specialist and will not require surgery, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. He will undergo treatment and further evaluation as he continues to play. Coach Kenny Atkinson stated it was “a little too early” to assess the long-term prognosis of the injury.
Impact on the Cavaliers
Harden was acquired in a trade from the LA Clippers on February 3rd and has been averaging 18.9 points, 8 assists and 4.6 rebounds in seven games with Cleveland. His absence was felt Wednesday night against the Bucks, with the Cavaliers also missing Donovan Mitchell (right groin strain) and Evan Mobley (left calf injury management).
The Cavaliers (37-23) entered Wednesday’s game with a record of 37-22, tied for third place in the Eastern Conference, having won eight of their past nine games.
Recent Performance
Prior to the trade, Harden averaged 25.1 points, 8.1 assists, and 4.8 rebounds in 44 appearances with the Clippers this season.
