OpenAI Secures $110 Billion in Funding, Valuing AI Leader at $730 Billion

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has raised $110 billion in a new funding round, propelling its valuation to $730 billion. The investment, announced on Friday, February 27, 2026, signals continued strong investor confidence in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape.

Investment Breakdown

The funding round saw significant contributions from several tech giants:

  • Amazon: $50 billion
  • Nvidia: $30 billion
  • SoftBank: $30 billion

OpenAI indicated that additional investors are expected to participate in the fundraising as it progresses. Morningstar reports that this valuation is more than double what OpenAI was worth a year ago.

Strategic Partnerships and Cloud Infrastructure

Alongside the investment, Amazon and OpenAI have forged a strategic partnership. OpenAI will leverage two gigawatts of computing capacity powered by Amazon’s Trainium chips, aiming to lower costs and improve efficiency in AI production. CNBC highlights that Amazon Web Services (AWS) will become the exclusive third-party cloud provider for OpenAI’s enterprise platform, Frontier.

This partnership does not alter OpenAI’s existing relationship with Microsoft. Microsoft Azure will continue to be the exclusive cloud provider for OpenAI’s APIs, and Microsoft retains its exclusive license and access to OpenAI’s intellectual property.

Growth and Monetization

OpenAI’s growth has been substantial, with over 900 million weekly active users of ChatGPT and more than 50 million consumer subscribers. The company also boasts 1.6 million weekly users of Codex, its AI-powered coding agent. Despite this user base, OpenAI’s annual recurring revenue in 2025 reached $20 billion, up from $6 billion in 2024, it still lags behind the revenue of established companies like JPMorgan Chase and Exxon Mobil.

Looking Ahead

OpenAI’s focus now shifts to scaling its infrastructure and improving monetization. The company recognizes that leadership in the AI space will be determined by the ability to meet growing demand for computing power and translate that capacity into reliable products. The funding round is expected to support these efforts as OpenAI prepares for a potential mega-IPO later this year.
