Situated just 8km from Cork city centre and a short drive from Blackpool, the castle has drawn visitors for centuries. Currently, several properties in Blarney are available for sale, offering a range of options for those seeking to live in this historic area.
A History of Blarney Castle
Originally a 10th-century timber hunting lodge, Blarney Castle was rebuilt in stone in 1210. The current structure was completed in 1446 by Dermot McCarthy, King of Munster.1 The castle remained the ancestral home of the McCarthy family for centuries, facing challenges during periods of political upheaval.
In 1646, the castle faced cannon fire from Oliver Cromwell’s forces.1 Fifteen years later, with the restoration of King Charles II, the McCarthys regained control. However, following the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, the family lost their power and were forced to leave.1 The castle was then sold to Sir James Jefferyes, Governor of Cork, in 1703.1 Today, Blarney Castle is managed by the Trustees of the Blarney Castle Estate.
The Legend of the Blarney Stone
The Blarney Stone, situated high within the castle’s battlements, is perhaps the castle’s most famous feature. Legend has it that kissing the stone bestows the gift of eloquence, or “blarney.”1 The origin of the term “blarney” itself is linked to Cormac Teige McCarthy, Lord of Blarney, and his diplomatic dealings with Queen Elizabeth I.
Queen Elizabeth I sought oaths of loyalty from Irish chiefs. McCarthy responded with skillful diplomacy, promising allegiance without fully conceding to her demands. Elizabeth famously remarked that McCarthy was giving her “a lot of Blarney,” thus coining the phrase.3 The stone is believed to be half of the Stone of Scone, originally from Scotland, and was gifted to Cormac McCarthy by Robert the Bruce in 1314 in recognition of his support at the Battle of Bannockburn.1
