Apple Expands Houston Manufacturing with Mac Mini Production

Apple is bolstering its U.S. Manufacturing presence by initiating Mac mini production at a Foxconn facility in Houston, Texas, later this year. This move shifts a portion of the Mac mini’s assembly from Vietnam and China, aiming to serve regional demand and diversify Apple’s supply chain.

Building on Existing Investment and AI Server Production

The expansion builds upon Apple’s existing investment in the Houston region, where Foxconn already operates a facility dedicated to assembling AI servers as announced in 2025. A 220,000-square-foot warehouse is being converted to accommodate the Mac mini production line. This initiative is part of Apple’s broader $600 billion investment commitment in the U.S. Over four years.

Addressing Regional Demand and Supply Chain Resilience

While the majority of Mac mini production will continue in Asia, the Houston facility is intended to address demand within the United States and reduce reliance on international supply chains. Apple COO Sabih Khan stated the company aims to “scale Mac mini here to serve our customers in this area,” according to the Wall Street Journal.

Mac mini’s Role in Apple’s Product Lineup

The Mac mini, a compact desktop computer, is popular among software developers and users of AI agent software. It also serves as a complement to laptop setups in professional environments. Despite its niche position, contributing less than 5% of Mac sales globally and under 1% of total Apple revenue, the move to domestic production signifies Apple’s commitment to supply chain diversification.

Foxconn’s Expanding Role in Houston

Taiwan-based Foxconn is managing the Houston facility on Apple’s behalf. The company acquired the Houston property in November 2024 for $33.03 million as reported by JakoTaindex, signaling early preparations for the project. Foxconn already employed approximately 2,000 people in the Houston region prior to the Apple expansion and is expected to increase its workforce as both Apple and Nvidia ramp up operations.

A Training Ground for the AI Workforce

Foxconn executives have described their Houston projects with Apple and Nvidia as a “training camp” for the next generation of America’s AI workforce as reported by the Houston Chronicle, highlighting the strategic importance of the region in developing skilled labor for the AI industry.
