Fargo Human Rights Commission Requests 60-Day Extension to Complete Board Restructuring

FARGO, N.D. – The Fargo Human Rights Commission is seeking a 60-day extension from the City Commission to finalize the restructuring of its board. The request comes after the board determined additional working sessions are needed to complete the transition plan.

Background and Initial Transition Period

On January 5, 2026, the Fargo City Commission approved a plan allowing the Human Rights Commission two months to develop a transition plan [Valley News Live]. Since then, the commission has held multiple working sessions to address the restructuring process.

Reason for Extension Request

While the board has made significant progress and drafted a resolution for consideration, a majority of its members concluded, following a meeting on February 19th, that more time is necessary to fully complete the restructuring [AM1100 The Flag].

Oversight and Guidance

Commissioner Strand and Assistant City Administrator Brenda Derrig are providing guidance and oversight during the working sessions. They are also incorporating input from former board members and the Executive Director of the North Dakota Human Rights Coalition [Valley News Live].

Upcoming City Commission Hearing

The recommended motion before the Board of City Commissioners is to grant the 60-day extension. The commission will hear the recommendation on Monday, March 2, at 5:00 p.m. At Fargo City Hall [Valley News Live].

Access to Meeting Information

Agendas and minutes from past Human Rights Commission meetings are available to the public [City of Fargo].
