Paola & Chiara: Chiara Iezzi Opens Up About Depression During Sanremo Return

Chiara Iezzi, one half of the Italian pop duo Paola & Chiara, has revealed she was battling depression and panic attacks during their highly anticipated return to the Sanremo Music Festival in 2023. The singer, now 53, shared her experience, explaining the internal struggle she faced while preparing to perform on such a prominent stage.

Navigating Mental Health Challenges

Iezzi questioned her ability to perform at her best, given her mental health state. “I was dealing with depression and panic attacks,” she stated. “So the idea of returning to Sanremo was wonderful, but I wasn’t sure I would be able to give my best on such a beautiful, but also difficult stage. I asked myself: ‘If I struggle to leave the house to go for a walk, will I be able to go to the Ariston?'” The Ariston is the name of the theatre where the Sanremo Music Festival is held.

Addressing Public Perception and Treatment

The duo’s return to Sanremo garnered significant public attention and Iezzi addressed the criticism she received during their participation. She attributed her perceived demeanor – described as “strange” or “dazed” by some – to the medication she was taking as part of her treatment.

Ongoing Recovery and a Positive Outlook

Despite the challenges, Iezzi expressed optimism about her current state. “I’m still in treatment, but the treatment worked very well,” she shared. “I feel safer, reborn.”

Paola & Chiara’s Career

Paola & Chiara, comprised of sisters Paola and Chiara Iezzi, began their career in 1997 after separating from the band 883. They gained recognition by winning the Modern-Artist category at the Sanremo Festival with their song “Amici reach prima” and have since released six studio albums. The duo achieved international success in 2000 and sold over 6 million records, becoming the best-selling female Italian group. Wikipedia
