Gangwon Governor Kim Jin-tae Champions Provincial Development, Navigates Legislative Hurdles

Gangwon Province Governor Kim Jin-tae has been actively promoting the region’s development and addressing key legislative challenges, including the passage of the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Act. Recent efforts include a large-scale provincial information briefing and securing significant national funding for infrastructure projects.

Provincial Information Briefing Draws Large Crowd

A provincial information briefing hosted by Governor Kim on February 28th at Kangwon National University’s Baengnyeong Art Center in Chuncheon-si attracted approximately 5,000 attendees, causing traffic congestion and parking difficulties. Governor Kim and his wife personally greeted residents, and the event featured a presentation on the province’s performance and a surprise magic present.

Advocacy for the Gangwon Special Act

Governor Kim has been a vocal advocate for the third revision of the Gangwon Special Act, which he believes is crucial for the province’s development. He has criticized the perceived unequal treatment of Gangwon Province compared to other regions, highlighting the delays in the act’s passage despite presidential pledges and national task designations. In a demonstration of his commitment, Governor Kim shaved his head alongside Gangwon Provincial Council Chairman Kim Si-seong in protest, a gesture that garnered attention and prompted discussions with other regional leaders. He even recounted advising the Mayor of Daejeon to take similar action to advocate for their region.

Securing National Funding and Infrastructure Projects

Under Governor Kim’s leadership, Gangwon Province has secured a record 10.26 trillion won in national funding, the largest amount in the province’s history. This achievement has enabled the successful application for eight social overhead capital (SOC) projects, including improvements to national roads, bridges, and subway lines. The province’s per capita share of national funding, at 6.8 million won, is the highest in the country, exceeding the national average of 4.13 million won.

Addressing Concerns and Future Plans

Governor Kim addressed concerns regarding the relocation of the provincial office, refuting claims of personal land ownership in the proposed new location and defending the scale of the planned administrative complex. He emphasized the importance of continued progress and collaboration to ensure Gangwon Province’s long-term prosperity.

Continued Engagement and Regional Collaboration

The ‘Gangwon-do Information Briefing with the Governor’ is scheduled to continue in Wonju on March 14th and Gangneung on March 28th, demonstrating Governor Kim’s commitment to direct engagement with residents across the province.
